Learning from Practice: The Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence

The session will introduce the Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence (RBA) and invite discussion of its use as a foundation for design education, planning and development practice, scholarship, and public engagement. RBA is a national design award that recognizes transformative urban places that contribute to the economic, environmental, and social vitality of American cities. The program offers more than three decades of research, evaluation and writing on architecture, urban design and development including 88 in-depth medalist case studies that offer insight into the collaborative process of placemaking and the evolution of places and practices over time.

Anne-Marie Lubenau, FAIAAnne-Marie Lubenau, FAIA, is an architect, educator and advocate for excellence in urban design and planning. She focuses on expanding the role of architects in shaping cities by engaging people in the process of design and increasing understanding about the built environment and its impact on our lives.

She leads college-wide efforts to connect education with practice through reflective assessment and experiential learning initiatives including the CityLab Intensive program.

Bob Shibley, FAIA, FAICPBob Shibley, FAIA, FAICP, is the Dean of the University at Buffalo’s School of Architecture and Planning. Bob co-authored the RBA Award prospectus, served as the first author for seven volumes, and wrote 26 of the 88 case studies.
