Edward Steinfeld, professor of architecture and Director of the IDeA Center, and Jordana Maisel, Director of Outreach and Policy Studies at the IDeA Center, announce the April release of their new book, Universal Design: Creating Inclusive Environments (Wiley). The book introduces designers to the principles and practice of designing for all people. From the foundations of accessibility and aging to the practice of designing interiors, products, housing and transportation systems, all aspects of this growing field are explored. Joyce Hwang‘s Bat Tower has been published in Praxis 13: Eco Logics which considers how architecture might use the logics of ecologies to move beyond received notions of sustainability.

Professor Despina Stratigakos recently presented a lecture entitled “Diversity in Architecture: Where Do We Go from Here?” at SOM New York. Together with Lori Brown, Peggy Deamer, and Dagmar Richter, she participated in the Van Alen Institute’s March roundtable on feminist pedagogies in architecture. Stratigakos’s related essay, “Inventing Feminist Practices: Women and Building in Fin-de-Siècle Berlin,” appears in Feminist Practices: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Women in Architecture, edited by Lori Brown (2011).
Jordan Geiger spoke on the “Beyond Digital” panel and moderated the “Situated Technologies” panel at the ACSA100: Digital Aptitudes Conference in Boston, early March. Geiger presented and participated in discussion with Adrian Blackwell at the “Assembly of Trash” Salon organized by Curt Gambetta at CEPA Gallery in Buffalo, New York, April 14. Geiger’s “Beau-Fleuve,” an installation and workshop with immigrant youth ran in late April as part of “Fluid Culture” public artworks in Buffalo.
