The School of Architecture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) invites applications and nominations for a tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant Professor rank to begin August 1, 2025. This position is for a full-time 9-month appointment. Appointments at Associate Professor rank will be considered.

The UTK School of Architecture has a strong commitment to supporting the teaching and study of history and theory of architecture, as well as positioning history/theory as part of a larger culture of collaboration within the curriculum. We seek a colleague who will contribute to this mission by exploring the operative role of history and theory in design pedagogy. The School of Architecture is undergoing an exciting period of growth and curricular exploration. We invite versatile, collaborative candidates eager to positively impact the discipline and the School’s trajectory and contribute to its vibrant culture.

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in architecture or a related field (ABDs may apply). The successful candidate will be expected to teach architectural design studios, in addition to lectures and seminars in the history and theory of architecture. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a robust body of research and/or creative work in the discipline of architectural history and theory. We welcome scholars with interests in any time period and geographical area, especially those who study topics, places and societies not represented in current faculty scholarship (now covering Europe and the United States). The College of Architecture and Design has funding to support research and/or creative pursuits.

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is a Research-1, land-grant university that houses eleven colleges and more than nine hundred programs of study. The College of Architecture and Design promotes imaginative, curious, and empathetic design, offering degrees in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Graphic Design. The College of Architecture and Design meets for courses and cultural activities in three main facilities: the 160,000-square-foot Art + Architecture Building in the center of UT Knoxville’s campus; the 20,000-square-foot Fab Lab, an advanced maker space located downtown; and a new satellite location that will house design studios, faculty, and staff in the center of Knoxville.

The Art + Architecture Building is an award-winning building which features open studios, a four-story atrium, the Ewing Gallery, a woodshop, review spaces, lecture halls, and faculty and staff offices. Our Fab Lab, with equipment valued at more than one-million dollars, includes advanced machinery for digital and robotic fabrication and allows our faculty and students to integrate state-of-the-art fabrication technology into design education and research.

About Knoxville and the Region

Known as ‘The Maker City,’ Knoxville is the third largest city in Tennessee with a metropolitan statistical area population of the county just over 500,000  people.  Downtown Knoxville supports an urban culture with theater, film, art, music, excellent restaurants, minority-heritage celebration events, farmers’ markets, and community gardens. Unique and walkable residential and business districts include Knoxville’s historic Market Square and Old City, North and South Waterfronts, and the Urban Wilderness recreational area.

East Tennessee presents a vibrant backdrop for exploration in architecture and design. With a rich and diverse history, the region includes urbanism at multiple scales as well as natural landscapes and national parks. The region has a strong tradition of technological advancement with the Tennessee Valley Authority and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in architecture or a related field (ABDs may apply); or an international equivalent of these qualifications.

Desired Qualifications (address those applicable in application)

On Teaching

  • Experience with, or capacity for, teaching the history and theory of architecture as well as architectural design studios.
  • Experience with, or the ability to, implement experimental teaching modalities, methodologies, and/or formats.
  • Interest in collaborative teaching and/or interdisciplinary courses.

On Research, Scholarship, Creative Activity, and Engaged Scholarship Research

  • A trajectory in scholarship, creative activities, and/or engaged research.
  • Experience with, or promise of, disseminating research or creative accomplishments via refereed venues.
  • Experience or capacity for successful grant-writing.

On Access and Engagement

  • Commitment to fostering student success, student empowerment, and the development of inclusive cultures within studio and classroom settings.
  • An interest in pursuing creative practice and/or scholarship that is inclusive of the achievements and knowledge of historically underrepresented communities and geographies.
