Service learning can be used to strengthen studentlearning outcomes in non-studio courses for architects, such as history-theory seminars. The author’s experimentationwith assignments provides a foundation forthis pedagogy. Institutional support, diverse studentskills, willing community partners, and questionnaireshave resulted in a variety of interdisciplinary, collaborative, active, and real-world projects. A decade’sworth of statistics and written student feedback clarifythat service-learning projects helped to raise studentperformance and enthusiasm, in addition to the benefitsthat community outreach brings to the academicprogram and to the university.
