Ground Is Someone's Land: Speculations on Community Engagement

Annual Meeting Proceedings

Author(s): Elizabeth Swanson

Theoretical approaches to conservation have recently shifted to place emphasis on community participation as a means to achieving conservation goals. This shift links conservation to development and focuses on the social and political understanding and engagement of specific, existing communities. By looking at recent successes and failures of this effort, the profession of architecture may learn to engage communities in a more effective and meaningful way and similarly reassert itself within the process of development, both at home and abroad.
