Fergusson is often credited with writing the first history of architecture that systematically incorporated different traditions around the world within a history of Western architecture. Using ethnography, the nascent genre of survey was able to account for difference of styles based on the perceived characteristics of their associated races. This paper argues for the significant impact of the ethnographical method on establishing the binary of a-historical non-Western architecture.
