Centro Educacional Crixá is a 6485m² public school to be built near the new social housing development of Bairro Crixá, in São Sebastião, in the region of Brasília, Brazil. The project has been selected as first prize in a national competition organized by the government of Brasília in 2018. The project starts from the premise that a school is an equipment of social transformation. Much more than a teaching center, it must be conceived as an open space to the community, alive and useful all day long. Its architecture, therefore, must reflect this civilizing desire, standing clearly as a landmark in the construction of a new neighborhood. Its design stems from the existing topography. In view of the almost nine meter gap within the building site, the school’s siting was thought in order to favor the accesses, without sudden interruptions with the surrounding sidewalks. The main building, a thin modular block, rests smoothly on the ground at the highest end of the site while, on the other end, it is supported by a built base. This gesture lets the program take advantage of the topography on three different levels: the lower ground floor, the middle ground floor, and the upper floor. Thus, the public part of the school is arranged at the lower levels, along with its administrative and support spaces. The upper part is reserved for pedagogical functions. Carefully seated on the ground, the school is as a horizontal building, allowing for a more receptive scale for visitors
