This paper examines the methodology and design outcomesof a graduate studio taught at Rice Architecture in Spring 2021titled “Institute for New Ecologies.” Sited in the former suburbof Brownwood and adjacent to the Baytown ExxonMobilRefinery, the studio explored the relationship betweenextraction, toxicity, and land, imagining how architecture canparticipate in new agendas for environmental care.
