Optimism has profoundly shaped architecture’sengagement with and organization of the world.Oscillating from the Critical (modern volume) throughthe Cruel (postmodern communication), StrangeOptimism offers the discipline both complexity andcorroboration. However, optimism is a contentiousterm associated with modern concepts of hope,utopia, and instrumentality. This essay posits formatsof architectural optimism during modernism and postmodernism,as well as develops a theory of optimismusing theories of trangeness.
