This article is dedicated to the study of contemporary temporary interventions of an extensionist nature and the participatory process, as means of positive transformation of places. The contemporary society is experiencing a period that is full of traces of transience in various layers of social and economic relations, reproducing in the spaces of collective life, individualism, the feeling of hostility and superficial relationships. Historically, the Brazilian architect and planner has no commitment to concrete reality, only to a small portion of it, the bourgeois reality. Thus, it continues to reproduce hegemonic forms of control over the construction of spaces. The option for participatory design is a possible response to political and social problems involving architecture and urbanism. The change in the performance and role of the architect and urban planner would promote effective forms of popular participation, guaranteeing the autonomy of communities involved in the process of building urban spaces. This work was developed through interventions made by students and professors of the Architecture and Urbanism course of the Federal Institute of Mato Grosso do Sul, in a public free space, close to the community installed less than 20 years ago in a housing complex, in the city of Jardim-MS. The interaction between students and the community has shown that it is possible and desirable, in any project situation, the partnership between the architect’s knowledge and the users’ experiential knowledge. The application of participative design methods favors a more faithful and closer architectural production to meet people’s needs and expectations.
