“Bertrand Goldberg: Architecture of Invention” at The Art Institute of Chicago opened to the public on Friday, 16 September 2011.  This exhibition is the first comprehensive retrospective of the architect’s work, and positions Goldberg’s career within a broad historical framework from his experimental origins at the Bauhaus to his visionary plans for the postwar American city. The exhibition is designed by IIT Associate Professor, John Ronan, John Ronan Architects and graphic designers Studio Blue. A memorial service for Associate Dean Peter Beltemacchi, will be held on Saturday, 29 October 2011 in S.R. Crown Hall on the Main Campus. Details will be announced on the IIT website.

College of Architecture Board of Overseer, Adrian Smith is featured in the Chicago Sun Times Newspaper. The Chicago-based firm of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture is designing what is to be the world’s tallest building, Kingdom Tower, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, near the Red Sea. Susan Conger-Austin, a faculty member in the College of Architecture, recently returned from an international design workshop in Santiago, Chile.  Professor Conger-Austin was invited to participate along with six universities: the Escuela Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain, the Escola da Cidade, Sao Paulo, Brazil, the Universidad Mayor, Santiago, Chile, Università Iuav di Venezia, Italy, Faculty of Architecture, Universidad de Palermo, Buenos Aires, Argentina and the School of Architecture, Universidad la República, Montevideo, Uruguay. IIT was the only American University invited. The purpose of the workshop was to analyze and develop strategies on how to integrate the Mapocho river  – which runs through most of Santiago –  into urban public spaces to be used by all. Each teams presented their final proposals to officials from Santiago’s Planning Department and various academic heads.
