Fall Conference Proceedings

Author(s): Sarah Michele Young

Speculative design has long been a method forarchitects to explore unrealized futures and generatecritical debate. To broaden the debate’s reachand thus maximize the hypothesizing potential ofspeculative design, designers must find methods ofcommunicating ideas to an extended audience andcultivate a shared vision; a starting point from whicha dialogue can begin. Storytelling can be a powerfulmethod for making speculative design accessible toall. This paper presents a case-study for bringing aseemingly remote future into examinable proximitythrough fable and speculative design.
