In our fast-growing urbanization, distressed street children with their lost childhood becoming a wide spreading, but not duly addressed social issue. To ensure a safe but child friendly environment for children/subjects with such vulnerable, traumatic & abused past and psychological state of mind ‘EKMATTRA’ A foundation with vision to support & change the life of destitute street children built this project. Built on a 3.4acre land, the idea of the project was to create a place of learning, rest, and play. The design of the complex approached to be functionally and aesthetically minimalist but embedded into the natural settings of the site. Like the common rural settings of built forms in Bangladesh, the courtyard or ‘Uthan’ is surrounded by the academic block, health centre, multipurpose facilities and the living quarter. The cluster design gives one a sense of the village homesteads bounded by natural landscape. The cross ventilation above the ceiling and under the roof takes away hot air and cools the environment down through convection. The glare free natural lights are used for comfortable indoor environment EKMATTRA and this project thus envisioned to build a discrimination free and child friendly environment for these children of GOD creating a place of ambience to ‘grow up’ with sense of freedom, ease of learning, austerity to dream and love of nature. So to say, the project is a responsible & responsive attempt to generate the pathway to exit from this vulnerable outcome of our fast growing unplanned urbanization.
