The University of Virginia School of Architecture invites applications for the Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture, seeking an accomplished designer, scholar, and educator to lead the department and advance its innovative teaching, research, and creative practice. The successful candidate will promote design excellence and use landscape architecture to address pressing social, cultural, and environmental challenges, contributing to the School\’s national and international reputation. As the head of one of four departments (Architecture, Architectural History, Landscape Architecture, and Urban and Environmental Planning), the Chair will enhance the MLA program’s strengths while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across the School, including the PhD in the Constructed Environment and undergraduate education. Candidates should demonstrate academic leadership experience and a record of excellence in scholarship, teaching, and professional practice or design research.
The Department of Landscape Architecture equips students with critical and technical skills to analyze and design landscapes that address 21st-century challenges. With a focus on cultural and social issues like race, democracy, environmental change, and urban-rural dynamics, the department emphasizes design, ecological processes, and technological innovation. As a public institution, the department’s work spans Virginia, the Chesapeake region, and global contexts, preparing students to lead transformative projects in infrastructure, public space, and the commons.
With internationally recognized faculty, the department excels in teaching design, history, and theory, while contributing to the field through award-winning creative work and scholarship. Supported by advanced facilities, such as the Landscape Lab and Morven Sustainability Lab, and interdisciplinary collaborations with Environmental Sciences and other fields, the department fosters groundbreaking research in areas like rural and coastal landscapes, climate resilience, and ecological restoration.
Qualifications include a terminal degree in landscape architecture (MLA) or equivalent, with a professional license or PhD preferred. The candidate must meet the requirements for a tenured Associate or Full Professor and be prepared to collaborate with the Dean, Chairs, and Faculty to advance UVA’s mission as one of the nation’s leading public universities.
