The University of Oregon (UO) Historic Preservation Program (HP) is inviting applications for a full-time tenured position at the rank of associate or full professor, starting in fall 2025. The chosen candidate will serve as the Program Director and hold the Venerable Chair in Historic Preservation for the duration of your term as Program Director. Based in Eugene, the program has strong connections with faculty and programs across the College of Design.
The UO Historic Preservation Program is part of the College of Design’s School of Architecture & Environment (SAE), which includes Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Historic Preservation. The College also includes the School of Planning Public Policy and Management, the School of Art and Design, and the Department of the History of Art and Architecture.
The HP program, which emphasizes building technology, preservation, cultural resource management, documentation, and sociocultural analysis, was established in Eugene in 1980, moved to Portland in 2017, and is seeking a return to Eugene. We’re looking for an exceptional academic leader in Historic Preservation, or an allied discipline, who excels in groundbreaking research and/or innovative professional practice. The candidate will play a crucial role in shaping the future direction of the UO Historic Preservation Program, with a focus on cutting-edge pedagogy, curriculum development, and close student mentoring. The HP Director is a three-year renewable term. The endowed Venerable Chair will provide important supplemental resources to the Director and the department.
As the Program Director, you\’ll oversee the Master of Science in Historic Preservation program, an undergraduate minor in HP, and the Pacific Northwest Field School. The Field School, one of the longest running in the nation, offers students the chance to work alongside professionals in a practical learning environment. It has been supported by the National Park Service and the State Historic Preservation and Parks Offices of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
