PATHWAYS TO GREATER IMPACT: Opportunities in Educational Leadership and the Alignment of the Architecture School
How is the mission of higher education changing and in what ways can leaders of architecture schools position themselves and their programs for success? This interactive workshop is intended to help current and prospective administrators reset their career compass, both through personal reflection and by gaining a broader understanding of how architecture schools can be best positioned for greater impact within the university.

UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO, School of Architecture & Planning
The School of Architecture and Planning resides on the university’s historic South Campus. Our state-of-the-art facilities include Hayes Hall, a nationally significant architectural landmark that reopened in 2016 after a comprehensive renovation that sets standards in historic preservation, inspirational design and sustainability. Our primary undergraduate studio spaces are held in Crosby Hall, now undergoing a renovation to its interior. Research and fabrication facilities offer the latest digital technologies, printing services and a fully-equipped materials and methods shop, allowing students to visualize, fabricate and develop their ideas and skills.

While it is true that some students “discover” architecture after being admitted, many students arrive having already engaged with architecture, design, or sustainability. What do they learn before getting to college? How are they introduced to the design disciplines? In the two morning sessions, presenters will discuss K12 efforts to promote architecture, and ways ACSA can help further their mission. The first session addresses national programs, and the second sessions looks more closely at local and regional practices.

NEW FRONTIERS & NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS
With the path to obtaining licensure widening and students seeking programs that align with their financial resources, schedules, and family commitments, how are educational institutions adapting, and what new solutions are emerging? This session presents insights into recent efforts to broaden access to architectural education. Co-chairs from ACSA’s Education Committee will review outcomes from the June 2023 Convening to Advance Community College Transfer and Articulation. We will hear from leaders of two unique programs offering new opportunities for students: a hybrid model enabling associate degree students to seamlessly transition into a NAAB-accredited program and the journey of a community college toward achieving NAAB accreditation. We will also learn about the key elements of a thriving transfer relationship between a community college and a university program.

STORYTELLING, MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS
Administrators need to communicate with a range of stakeholders: faculty in the discipline, academic leaders outside the discipline, alumni, prospective students, potential donors and partners. How do we develop a strategic plan for communication and storytelling? How do we talk to non-architects about the importance of what our faculty do and how they impact everyday lives.

RESEARCH PARTNERSHIPS FOR IMPACT
This session highlights ways that architecture programs are partnering on research projects in ways that expand the program’s reach and impact. The session presenters will talk about their projects and partners, and we will focus on the role of administrators in leading and facilitating partnerships. Following the theme of the conference, the session will explore how curricular goals and pedagogical practices can intersect with research and how schools can challenge academic norms of scholarship and financial support to increase our effectiveness.

Tau Sigma Delta LUNCH
All are invited to join the Tau Sigma Delta Honor Society for a lunch meeting. The Tau Sigma Delta Honor Society in Architecture and Allied Arts is the only national honor society for architecture and design majors that is accredited by the Association of College Honor Societies. The Society recognizes intellectual achievement, effort and initiative as well as leadership and character. This prize of membership acknowledges undergraduate and graduate students who attain high scholastic standing in their field.

POST-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP
NAAB ACCREDITATION: How to Conduct a Successful On-Campus Site Visit
This half-day workshop will guide participants through the essentials for preparing for a successful accreditation visit under the new 2020 Conditions and Procedures, as NAAB returns to on-campus site visits. Presenters will provide an overview of writing the Architecture Program Review (APR) to selecting, annotating, and displaying student work and identifying other evidence of compliance with the Conditions for Accreditation. The workshop will explore the 2020 Conditions, describe the relevant Procedures, review requirements for evidence, brief participants on best practices in assessment, and highlight guidance on preparing for an on-campus site visit. The workshop will include presentations, best practices, exercises, tips from team chairs and program directors, and time to ask questions.

SILO CITY | Joining us for an informal gathering in Silo City area of downtown Buffalo. Silo city sits on the south shore of the buffalo river just 600 yards from Lake Erie, and is the grandest collection of concrete grain elevators in the world.
