Templo de Dandara

The project for the Templo de Dandara installation is strongly connected to the “Track 1 – Diversity and Mixture”, proposed by the World Congress of Architects in its 27th edition – UIA 2020 RIO. The installation seeks to relate architecture with visual arts in a more direct and visceral way; within some kind of “in-between” which, simultaneously, aims to use both arts as a means to revival, denunciation, and dialogue about human diversity, especially issues related to the rights of LGBTQIA+ people (even though this track does not limit whatsoever the word “diversity” to just that bias). The installation also seeks to establish a symbiosis with the space of the Museum room (in this case, the MARCO – Museum of Contemporary Art of Mato Grosso do Sul, project by architect Emmanuel de Oliveira), taking advantage of its shape, its elements and its volume as a whole. In this void, the proposal marks three different spatialities that embody three different narratives (1 – Introduction/conclusion; 2 – Temple of Dandara; and 3 – Death). Through these parts, a path of reflection and meaning is proposed about the tragic and brutal murder of transvestite Dandara dos Santos, in 2017, in the city of Fortaleza/CE; such fact is spatially reinterpreted by this installation, showing that architecture can be a powerful, plural, urgent form of expression capable of communicating contemporary issues such as sexual diversity, and the persistent intolerance towards minorities arising throughout the society. God save the Queen Dandara!
