New Territories for Old Architecture: Nomadic History as a Design Strategy in the Redevelopment Urban Project for the Kadhimiya Historical Site, Baghdad, Iraq

The purpose of this paper is to explore how the possibilityof using history as a dynamic, intensive forcein an urban design thinking process can escape thehistoricism and representational image functionarytowards a re-engineered creative historical/ architecturaldialogue. By comparing two existing urbanproject strategies for the redevelopment of theKadhimiya historical site, this paper will examinethe difference between mimicking historical stylesin a decontextualized manner and repeating themwith difference using the theory of Difference andRepetition outlined by the French philosopher GillesDeleuze.
