This paper considers the proximity and remotenessin the dual relation in Gordon Matta-Clark’s workbetween art-and-architecture but also between thephysical and the psychological, through the relationwith his father, the artist-trained architect RobertoMatta. By examining the locus of his work, this textinvestigates themes of physicality and reachability aswell as the inaccessibility of the psychological in themulti-media work of the artist. To achieve this, thispaper examines the collection of the artist’s archivedwork and the operation of what was to archive, toconsigned it within an architectural institution in theCanadian Centre for Architecture. It is framed underJacques Derrida’s Archive Fever as a way to introducethe connection between the physical and the psychologicalin the archive.
