“Pop-Up” interventions often have an insurgent, combative cast, in intention if not always in form. They challenge the fundamental assumptions underlying control ofurban land. But while these overnight interventions may have a galvanizing effect,the process of social change requires a careful and collaborative engagement thatneither begins nor ends with that catalytic moment. This paper is the story of thelong gestation and lasting impact of a pop-up cultural event—a music festival and anovernight “health and wellness village”—in Newark, New Jersey.
